Colour Block Capsule Wardrobe Challenge

This October I am challenging myself to dress from a handmade colour-blocked capsule wardrobe! I’ve been dreaming of doing this for months now and I think with the weather warming up it’s the perfect time to give it a try. I’ve selected 14 items from my handmade wardrobe including 3 unfinished projects and everything else will be pushed aside or put in a separate wardrobe so there are no distractions.

The Challenge:

For 31 days I am going to wear outfits made up of the 14 selected items. There will be mixing, there will be matching, there will also be OUTFIT REPEATING… And Im pumped! Like other capsule challenges (eg. Project 333), I haven’t included shoes or accessories so it’s all about the colour combos. There are also 3 unfinished/unmade tops that I plan to make throughout the month to round off the 14 garments.

When?

Every day in the month of October! The only times the capsule challenge won’t apply is when I’m exercising or sleeping OR when I’m working/have to do a job that requires me to wear something not included in the capsule. However, I will try to incorporate them as much as possible.

Why?

  1. I have enough stuff! I have enough clothes and fun frocks to wear, I don’t NEED anything new. Sewing my own clothes brings me so much joy, but now that I have made a lot of my wardrobe, I don’t feel an urge to create more. I recognise that I’ve been in this NEW, MORE, NEW mindset because as a content creator, I feel I need to be sharing something new in order to stay relevant. But do I? It’s hard to get out of that mindset because when I started DIY Daisy it was all about sewing a me-made wardrobe. But now that I have sewn a me-made wardrobe (mostly) does it mean I can stop?

  2. I’m a bit burnt out. I have been working on some big projects that required me to SEW lots of things so I need a break from stitching and am excited to try some other crafts I have always wanted to. I need a bit of creative self-care time and I think by making the getting dressed part easier, I will have more time to do Daisy time and hopefully get inspired for some new DIY tutorials. I want to work on my Liberty Hexie Quilt, try weaving with my collection of tapestry wool and make a patchwork quilt cover with more of my linen scraps. So stay tuned for some different creative endeavours.

  3. My sister Aurora is a great capsule dresser and I was always so envious of her when we travelled together because she just had a handful of things she rotated and she always looked so cool. I remember going on holiday once and worried so much about what I was going to wear I think it took away from my experience. I also found myself lugging my suitcase around feeling completely stupid for packing so much when I could have worn the same outfit days in a row and nobody knew me so they would never have known. I want to feel like I could just grab a handful of clothes (3 tops and 3 bottoms) and be able to go on a holiday for a week and not need anything more than that (and some undies of course). Not that Im going anywhere any time soon, but the thought is there. Practise for when we can travel again perhaps?

  4. If I ever wrote a children’s book, this is what I imagine my outfits would be like - probably illustrated by Furry Little Peach. I think there is just something so fun and cool about colour-blocked outfits, featuring garments that I love. I know they suit my body, I’m comfy in them and so, I’ll feel confident.

  5. Finally, I just want to see If I can do it. It doesn’t mean I won’t ever wear my other DIY creations again, but I want to see if I still need to hold onto them or if maybe I can downsize and be ók with a smaller me-made wardrobe. It’s also a chance for me to just do something for myself and make content for fun.

At the end of the month, I’ll recap and reflect. Maybe I’ll answer some of the questions I asked myself in this post or maybe I’ll just share lots of outfit photos. By writing it here I guess I have to hold myself to it! Follow along as I share updates each week @_diydaisy.
